I have a mix for you this week that I think you're going to really like. It's both a mix for Ciara herself as it is for all her readers. Since it's Valentine's Day, I wanted to make a mix but didn't want it to be full of cliched songs that you've heard over and over. It's a mix that includes a lot of old songs, but a collection of well-worn songs for me. You might wonder why it starts with Guess Who's "These Eyes" because it's not necessarily a love song. It's a simple answer; I find more joy in belting out that song in public than what the subject matter is. You might also remember a famous movie scene from Superbad involving Michael Cera singing it too, but I digress.

I love every track on this playlist, and a lot of them are slower than previous playlists, but I think you'll really enjoy it. Midway through is GAYNGS (a band compiled of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and over 20 other collaborators) doing a cover of SADE's "By Your Side". I don't have scientific proof, but I'm pretty sure this track is the sexiest songs ever put down on record. Just listen for yourself. And any great Valentines playlist wouldn't be complete without ending it with Mew's "Comforting Sounds". That track means a lot to Ciara and myself.

Susannah Darrow is the Executive Director of BURNAWAY (Online Arts Publication). She is a native Atlantan who left briefly to study art history, printmaking, 60s and 70s underground music, and English at the University of Georgia. She now is pursuing a graduate degree in art history from Georgia State University. Susannah is a member of the Forward Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award Committee and serves on the Board of Directors of Art Papers. When not pushing Atlanta arts on the masses she is loving on her pug, Orson, and unabashedly searching out animal figurines and pink artwork for her house.

Deer vignette area: I get really obsessed with creating my "tableau's" all over my house. This one is definitely my favorite. The deerhead, Harold, was something my boyfriend traded for two lamps a few years ago. I like the he greets everyone who comes through the front door. The cyanotype print was a gift from my friend, Cooper Sanchez. The bottles are something I pick up whenever I see one I like. I have way too many of them now... The other stuff is just random knick-knacks that I have picked up over the years from yard sales, trips, scouring my parents house, you name it.

Necklace: I found the pendant in an old jewelry box of my grandmother's that I inherited after she passed away. It was actually an anniversary gift that my grandfather received from the company he worked for after 50 years. It's definitely my prized possession. I wear it almost everyday.

Record player: To say that there is a lot of music in my house is a bit of an understatement. The record player is definitely the most used device in this house. We have somewhere around 4500 records in the house, so we have to use it all the time to make sure that everything stays loved and listened to.

SPARKLY YOUNG MAGIC

Today I have something special for you. Ciara and I had the opportunity to see Youth Lagoon some months back, and the biggest surprise was the opening act. They go by Young Magic and their show was a sprawl of percussion, electronics and chants. The way I thought of it was that it was similar to Yeasayer's first album before they headed in a different direction. I can certainly say if you're a fan of Yeasayer or Ruby Suns, this will be up your alley.

The video featured first is their first single and first track off their debut album "Melt". The video is a clash of colors, landscapes and cloud imagery, but goes very well with the track.

Second, "Melt" is released next Tuesday February 14th (perfect valentines day gift, right?) and Hype Machine is streaming the record through February 14th. It's got some fantastic sounds and encourage to give it a listen today or sometime this week.

1. I downloaded The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides last night on my Kindle. I've heard a lot of great things about this book, so I'm excited to start reading.

2. Over the weekend I'm planning a visit to this cute bakery, Cakes and Ale. My interest lies mainly to get my hands on a French macaroon. They are so hard to find in Atlanta... or at least I've had some trouble. yeesh.

3. The ladies at Our Paper Shop have done it again! A gorgeous February desktop wallpaper. I usually don't change mine, but this one really pulled on my heart strings. They have two to choose from. Download from here and here.

4. I just bought some earrings from Dinosaur Toes and then found this pretty necklace. Now I'm a serious fan. I love the colors.

5. Bri posted a little DIY on "dipping" cool household objects. I might have to do this. Spray paint is always an easy solution to quick spice ups and fixer uppers.

6. A really neat video montage of all the overhead shots from Wes Anderson films. LOVE IT.

Hi friends! I am very excited to introduce to you a new feature on Glass and Sable called Home // Closet // Tool. This is a new column, possibly weekly (but no promises) that will highlight talented creatives and the items they surround themselves with from their home, closet, and tools. And if I can meet with the person, I'll be taking the photos myself. I hope you enjoy!

My name is Alana. I am an enthusiast, a farer of ways, and I am always eating. I currently design, assemble, and cook things at Matchstic in Atlanta, Georgia.

I chose my dubbies for my closet piece since it was a purchase I never thought twice about. A few months back, I saw The Crocodiles at The EARL here in Atlanta and one of the band’s ladies was donning these amazing shoes. I returned home, made an offer to an eBay seller, and these Italian beauts arrived on my doorstep. As a daily commuter, I have noticed a considerable difference between stepping on leather soles and those made of pressed paper. If you’d like to know the specifics, they are J.Crew Lottie Monk Strap shoes.

The item that represents my home is Ferran Adria’s “The Family Meal” and my tool of choice is a Zwiling Cronidur 8 incher chef’s knife. I am of a family of omnivores that considers dinner as the most important household occasion. My significant other is a chef whose knife is second only to me. At the moment, you can find a half-gallon of homemade beef stock in my fridge. It is obvious that food is a huge deal in my home, but what interests me most about cooking is its equivalence to the design process. Both consider time management, the use of tools, trial-and-error, and creativity. I can best explain my relationship to cooking and design through Ben Chestnut’s words, “Do what you love, and love what you do.” Simply put, I cook at home, and I design at work.

STUCK LIKE GLUE

If I were a cartoon character set in a cartoon that only took place in the winter time, this is what would be on every hanger in my closet. I was looking for the perfect chambray shirt for a while and now that I have it, I have a serious internal battle to not wear it every day. This outfit, of course, isn't what I wear everyday but I wish I could. It is comfortable, flexible, and definitely urban. I can go to work without the hat and then smack it on right before the concert. The brass earrings and the satchel are just enough glam to get me by, as well as the sparkly nail polish. Just style my hair and makeup, and I'm ready!

A LAZY WEEKEND

I had a lovely weekend taking it easy. My job had a huge project I've been working on for months and we finally got the bulk of it done. So as a nice little reward, they gave me a paid half day for Friday and a trip to an Aveda Spa for a massage. Talk about starting the weekend off right!

I also went with Tim and our friend, Kim to see their favorite band, The Mountain Goats. I was probably the only one in the audience who didn't know all the words to the songs, but it was fun. I had a great time surrounded by such excited, passionate people.

On Saturday, we went to the park and read for a while. I buried myself in Kinfolk Magazine, which is more amazing that I ever thought it could be. If you don't know, Kinfolk Magazine is a guide to small gatherings - a tribute to intimate coming togethers of friends and loved ones over food and drink. The photos and excerpts are wonderful and romantic. It is certainly going to help me take more time to make small events more special.

Other highlights include blueberry pancakes, trying a new nail polish (OPI Warm & Fozzie), and skyping with my mom.

GOLDFISH SALVATION

Riusuke Fukahori is an amazing Japanese artist that paints three dimensional goldfish. At first I thought, "Goldfish died in that resin!! :( " But then after watching that video, and doing some research, it became clear that Fukahori actually paints in different layers of the poured resin, giving off the three dimensional illusion. Gorgeous, right?

If you haven't yet experienced Yours Truly, you're in for a real treat today. Yours Truly is a site that constantly posts amazing videos, materials and letters from some of the best musical acts around. Last year I even got to experience a few tapings of some acts in Austin Texas, and the folks that put these together are truly talented. Most of them are shot with SLRs and are fantastic portrayals of the band.

This one in particular is the band Guards. You may know some of the members from another budding band called CULTS. The track is "See It Coming" shot with some extra folks helping them out. Now, stop reading this and just watch and take in this video. A wonderful song, a wonderful band and a wonderful new day. Enjoy!

1. I'm sure you all heard or have read articles about SOPA and it's awfulness. There were a bunch of sites blacked out in protest, which is awesome. So if you don't know about it, this beautifully designed video will explain it. EDIT: it got postponed today! Enough voices were heard that Congress dropped the whole thing... for now. yay!

2. Anabela from Fieldguided did a gorgeous photoshoot of the contents of her massive bag. Inside was this cute mini satchel that I'm loving. My business cards might find a new home!

I GET NERVOUS // MIX BY I'M A BEAR! ETC.

Tim Lampe is a writer for I'm A Bear! Etc. (and my awesome boyfriend!) who is currently reading the book 1Q84 and pondering staircases. He writes and takes pictures for I'm A Bear! Etc. and thinks you should start your year off with the right music.

This mix is called 'I Get Nervous' and it's really inspired by this track by Lower Dens called 'I Get Nervous'. It was one of my favorite tracks of 2010, and this week Lower Dens announced their new album. My revisiting of Lower Dens combined with the paranoia created from reading 1Q84 means that I've put together a mix that feels right to your nerves. It doesn't cause extra tension, believe me. It won't stress you out, by any means. If anything, it should help out. From the slow-burning start of Lower Den's new track "Brains" to Los Campensinos' triumphant anthem "Hello Sadness", this should be what you have on repeat this week.

Additionally, it also features a few new 2012 tracks you should hear such as Porcelain Raft's "Put Me to Sleep" and Sharon Van Etten's "Serpants" in addition to Lower Den's "Brains".

3. Matchstic Branding Agency posted a very interesting article on their blog about craftsmanship and consumerism. It is sad that truly magnificent handcrafted work is being smitted by businesses like Burger King trying to stay up on the trends. Do they actually think that we believe their burgers are “artisan crafted”? I think not.

4. Jessica Comingore tweeted about this Etsy shop and I fell in love with the astronomoy section. All of the prints are gorgeous.

5. I'm currently reading Scott Fitzgerald's The Beautiful and Damned. It's not only set in the 1920's like The Great Gatsby, but it has been noted to be extremely similar to Fitzgerald's own life and marriage with Zelda. I'm not very far in, but it's wonderful already.

I have been seeing a lot of logos and branding work that looks like seal or stamps. I'm sure you've seen a lot of circle ones with ribbon banners, but I find the hexagon and other shapes very appealing also. I love the idea of a logo also being a stamp - or really, just stamps in general.

One of my good friends, Alana Dy, works for a Graphic Design/Branding Agency called Matchstic. I'm sure some of you have heard of them, or at least seen their awesome business cards. When she showed me what they looked like, I was in love! They have a heavy weight card with letterpress and then each designer stamps their own information on the blank side. I really love that. So I am in the process of designing a logo for a friend's multimedia business. He's a rugged adventurer type and he recently moved to Israel. So I think having a semi rugged stamp-esque logo for him would work. Having a stamp made with your logo could also come handy! What do you think of this design trend?

I really love Turkish Kilim pillows (and rugs for that matter). I've been searching around for the perfect ones for my place. There is something really wonderful about handmade items, as these pillows were once hand woven rugs. That is also the packages I made and the new Minnetonka shoes that Tim got me. I love them so much! I don't ever want to take them off!

TAKE A BREAK

As this year is coming to an end and this holiday season is approaching quickly, I am slowing down. This has been a long, wonderful, busy year and I am ready for my well deserved break. Everyone does.

For bloggers and non bloggers alike (those of you who have other hobbies) we fill so much of our time to the fullest capacity. I wake myself up in the morning by checking emails and twitter and go to sleep making sure I don't have any more notifications. We are on a constant drive to document life and now this is the time for rest and reflection.

This year at some points both dragged on and slipped by. I did so many more things this year than I did in the last three years combined. I'm sure that Tim took me to at least 40 shows and I enjoyed them all. I spent a lot of time with new friends, new restaurants, and new tunes. This was a wild success. Don't forget that I met Tim earlier this year, which has completely changed everything for me - in a good way. I am so grateful for him.

Now when it comes to next year, I am looking forward to planning out more specifically the direction I want to go. There are a bunch of things I want to accomplish and set out to do. More design, original concepts, develop more of my personal style, and start collaborating with other designers. Also, I want to write down some new traditions or goals for me and my loved ones in the new year.

I will still be posting here through the end of the year, but maybe not on the every day basis as before. There is now family in town and I want to indulge in the memory making that is about to go on. And you should too! So here's a toast to everyone taking a sweet rest, getting in the spirit of Christmas, and living life to its fullest.

Meet Fran and Zooey. The new members of the family! Remember that little P.S. I told you to make sure and see? It was about these two cuties. Fran is the white one, and Zooey is the one in the back. I know it's not a good picture of her, but I promise I'll have plenty more of them. Fran looks crazy crosseyed, but I promise, he was just sleepy. haha They are both ragdoll cats, which is a very sweet, calm breed. These two just hang out, want to be pet, and are so loving. They are both a year and a half and came from a friend. Tim and I are in love with them already. ♥

I’m not sure if any of you subscribe to Gilt, but it’s one of those deal websites that connect you with sweet bargains. If it weren’t for Gilt, I wouldn’t have found out about 80%20 shoes so soon. Tim is coming with me and this will be the longest family time to be had for him with my family. *nervous* It'll be good! I'm sure that it will still surprise me how much warmer it is down there. One state south and the weather is so different. We're even going to my favorite beach. Wow. I hope you have a great weekend too! :)

I don't talk about school much around here, but I am currently an Arts Administration major. I took this year off to take a break, as it would have been my 5th year, and I was starting to do poorly in my classes. I ended up taking all the classes I was excited about and left all the boring and hard ones for the end. Big mistake.

The major was chosen as a plan B after an adviser at my university tried to guide me away from the Graphic Design program. I was a junior at that point (with not much experience in design) and the extremely competitive 3 year program only accepted 15 a year. Not only were the odds severly against me for getting accepted, but I'd be in school for an additional 3.5 years. That wasn't exactly what I had planned for when I had transfered to the school. So I chose Arts Administration, since my love for Art History and galleries had been growing.

Then after I had changed my major, my new adviser explained to me that the curriculum for the major had changed in the last few years and besides Art History and Marketing classes, it now included Theatre classes. Okay, so I took musical theatre in high school, but yeah, I'd much rather be taking art classes. Oh well. Well that no big deal has turned into a bigger deal.

There are no marketing classes offered for non-marketing majors. That essentially means that I have to take accounting, and possibly a few economics classes just to get into the 5 or so marketing classes I need to be in, and those prereqs aren't even listed in my curriculum. Then the theatre classes have evolved into these intense film script writing classes (which are cool, don't get me wrong, but not exactly the kind of creativity I need nurtured).

I was planning on going back to school next semester and kick accounting's ass for the 3rd and hopefully last time, but I started realizing about two weeks ago that I am not looking forward to school at all. And considering that I am paying for school myself, I better be enjoying it! I know that if I don't have a positive attitude going into it, I'm not going to do well.

All that being said, (deep breath) I am going to redirect my path. I decided that I need to go to school for what will fuel me and keep me excited on my path. I realized that all along, since I graduated high school even, that I wanted to be a graphic designer. I've spent the last two years building my skills and getting better at what I love to do. I think owning a gallery would be nice, but at the end of the day, it's not what I want to do. So because of this elite program at my school, I am going to look into two options:

1. Transfer to SCAD for design
This is an awesome, but kinda scary option. I need to look into the price difference in tuition and how many credits will transfer - as I only need 30 to graduate.

2. Change my major to Art and then do a year at a Portfolio school
Not the most glamerous route, but I'll have a creative degree (and spend the rest of my education learning more about printmaking and honing in on my drawing skillz) and hopefully a decent portfolio.

SO HOW DOES THAT SOUND?! I'm just gonna go run after what I love.

I spend the majority of last weekend with Tim's family for Thanksgiving. Tim's sister, Katie, and her boyfriend, Andrew, live in New Jersey and work in New York City. She is a Creative Merchandiser for Urban Outfitters and has amazing style. I guess it helps when you work for Urban, right? So naturally, every time I saw her in a new outfit my jaw was on the floor. So I thought I'd share with all of you some Katie highlights. Besides all the clothes, she wore MAC Rich Ground Fluidline which is to die for. It was interesting seeing her pairings, as I found I was loving them all, but might not have paired them for myself. I love new ideas. Also, that picture doesn't give the poncho justice. It was a real looker in person.

TIM TUESDAYS: YOU MIGHT GET STUCK ON ME

Remember how Tim used to make a mix for Tuesdays? Well here's a video instead! It's been a little wild over on the Tim front - he's been shooting a lot of shows here in Atlanta for Paste Magazine and Drive A Faster Car (and might have his M83 pictures featured in SPIN Magazine). So to make the load a little easier, these Tuesday will just be music related, and not necessarily a mix. So enjoy the music column and check out his blog!

Listening to Summer Camp is like experiencing someone doing a keg stand on long beach island in the summer of 1983. Their debut album "Welcome to Condale" was recently released, and as it sounds, it's about a beach town stuck in the 80's with the inability to grow up.

Well fast forward to 2011 and there's a new Summer Camp video for a new song commissioned by 17 Nail Polish. Before you veer your eyes away thinking you're about to watch a commercial for nail polish, you're not. Their simply the budget behind the song and the video. The new track is titled "You Might Get Stuck On Me" and the video is a wonderful concept. A girl in a green sweatshirt and a guy in a yellow sweatshirt. Oh yeah, and there's a bunch of rogue hands preoccupied with various activities while a TV plays a video with the actual members of Summer Camp.

Watch the video and I highly suggest you check out their excellent record "Welcome to Condale" and vote it Prom Queen of 2011.

Let's talk about Cargo Collective. "Cargo is a creative publishing platform where everything, from the ever-changing visual appearance of people’s personal websites to the user interface, is built around the work shared by its members. Every Cargo site I've come across belongs to a creative genius. Yesterday on twitter I expressed my desire for a site, but more like shared my goal, you know? And then Mike Germon, one of the artists who runs MINT Gallery sent me an invite. Totally awesome! So in the spirit of Thanksgiving, Thanks, Mike!

I hope you have a great time with your families during this long weekend. I wish I could be with my folks, eating my dad's AWESOME turkey and stuffing, but I'll have that soon. As a tradition, every time I visit my parents in Tampa, our first meal together is a Thanksgiving meal. I can't wait! But for this weekend, I'll be with Tim's family, and it will be wonderful. His sister and her boyfriend are coming down from New Jersey and I look forward to seeing them again.

My friends and I had a Friendsgiving on Saturday. I loved it. Everyone brought a home cooked dish and we were able to put a real Thanksgiving dinner together. At one quiet point while everyone was eating, my friend Kim said, "I think we're adults now, I can't believe we all did this." (or something like that.) And I think everything was thinking the same thing. I can't believe I'm growing up and hosting Thanksgiving dinners. It was a perfect day. :)

So Blogshop was on Thursday, so it wasn't really the weekend, but it sure did feel like it. Here are some of the Smilebooth photos from my fun time with Blogshop. The last few pictures were from the mini Smilebooth set up at HD1, a hot dog restaurant where everyone met up after class. Tim stopped by for a minute and we got a few pictures together. Hey there folks! If you follow me on instagram, you know that I was at Blogshop yesterday. I heard that a few of you wanted to hear about it, so listen in!

First off, I was not a student of the class and did not attend the entire length of the course. This specific course was three days and geared towards photographers. The first two days consisted of photo training, tips, and a photo shoot. I came for the third day when Angela and Bri arrived and taught the students how to use Photoshop to edit their photos. I was an assistant and helped the students when they had questions during the class.

I have been following Bri's blog, designlovefest for about a year now and that's how I found out about Blogshop. I like her energy and her design style and liked the ideas behind teaching others how to blog and use photoshop. I wanted to make sure that my growing appreciation and support for Blogshop was well deserved. So I invested myself into it and found that it is, truly, a wonderful thing. Now's here's the best part - my experience at Blogshop, even though it was only one day, was more fullfilling than I ever expected. Being around all those photographers and seeing their passion for design and creativity was the most inspiring. I had a wonderful time getting to know the students and meeting the ladies and the photographers running the course.

So all in all, it was a success and I really enjoyed myself. I am so glad that Atlanta is getting on the map for creative things. Next up, Creative Mornings here on December 9th for round 3 with Tina Roth Eisenberg in attendance! Yay!

AIR PLANT CRAZE

Air plants are seriously the plants for me. Dip them in water every now and then, and that's it! Stick them where ever you want and you don't have to worry about pots or soil or any of that. Sounds like a dream, right? Now here's the thing. Lots of people are selling them on Etsy for half a fortune. I was looking up some wholesale sites and even ebay has them for a lot cheaper than Etsy sellers. Air Plant Supply Co. has a beautiful selection, great prices, and information. At least check out their site. And this is a cute place to put one of your air plants!

Also, as a side note, Fab.com has a special on air plants from Air Plant Supply Co. and hanging pods. Score!

BLOGSHOP IN ATLANTA

Hi friends and family - this is for you. You might have heard me talk about a 2 day internship and you were probably wondering why it might be so short or what it is. The video above was taken in New York of a Photoshop course for bloggers, appropriately called Blogshop. Two lovely ladies, Bri Emery and Angela Kohler started the course in LA and have traveled all over (even Europe!) with Blogshop. It is an intense bootcamp for people who want to improve their websites and design skillz. This week they're here in Atlanta and I'm helping them out. I'm super excited and I'm so glad I have your support and love. Can't wait to tell you all about it!

So just as a heads up, I'm working on a new header for the blog, as well as some other design elements. I really do love the one I have, and it has a deep place in my heart, but I've come a long way from there now. Moving on up! I can't tell you when it'll be live, but I am working on it!

In other news, tonight is the opening night of the art show I helped curate and showing a piece in. This is the first time I have shown a piece in Atlanta, so I'm nervous and excited about it. I spent last night hanging some of the art pieces. It was so exciting seeing it all come together and see my piece hanging there.

After the show we're seeing Youth Lagoon. Please, I'm begging you, if you haven't heard Youth Lagoon yet, please do it. Go on Spotify or Grooveshark or whatever you have, just listen. He will romance your ears.

Over one hundred women from different parts of the country were joined together by Alyson Fox. Though instead of similar interests tying them together, they are all joined by one shade of red lipstick. Fox photographed women of all races and ages wearing Revlon's #740 Certainly Red lipstick. Her ideas stem from the development of a women's self image by applying lipstick and the transformation of a women when photographed. You can read more about it here.

Here is a very moving quote found on her site:

I am so sorry that I have been a missing person! It's true, I've really slacked off. I acknowledge it! I take the blame for it! So what was I doing? Honestly, it's kind of pathetic. I was upgrading my jailbroken iPhone to the new ios 5. I ran into a couple of errors and kept having to do the jailbreak over and over and over. Blah. But I'm back! (and for good!)

The photo above was taken by Tim, but it's of the new ampersand I bought! It was made by Edie's Lab, found on Etsy. They make a ton of these beautiful wooden letters. Gosh I love them all! Needless to say, I'm very please with the newest addition.

We've been all sorts of busy. We saw Wild Flag on Saturday night in Athens at the 40 Watt Club. If you don't know who Wild Flag is, you might know who Carrie Brownstein is - the lead lady of the comedy show Portlandia. She's one of the singers/guitarists for Wild Flag. They rocked out! It was a glorious show. Amazing girl rock at its finest. Totally check them out.

Btw, I'm gushing over all the love around here on Glass and Sable. You folks are so nice! ♥

"It's true! Americans love the 1960s - as seen from all the outpouring on Mad Men - Quick! Let's pump out several 1960s shows too!"

I'm sure that's what the producers of Pan Am and The Playboy Club were thinking. It's also a possibility that if you copy someone's idea, you might not get as far as they do. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Pan Am, it takes place in the early 60s with four Pan Am flight attendants. This is when flight attendants were practically models and flying in on plane got you more than just free peanuts. The idea of this show is not bad, I have to admit. I was genuinely excited to watch the pilot and hoped that it could fill the huge Mad Men hole in my heart.

Any time period film or show has one essential - make the period authentic. If the settings are authentic and true to that period, you're half way there. Build a strong plot after that and you have the beginnings to a sustainable show/film. However, mess up that period, and you've already lost. Thus are my feelings towards Pan Am.

Over the last few weeks as I've been researching the set design for Mad Men, I came to understand the part of the reason it has such a huge fan base is because the costumes and furniture aren't set pieces. Almost every piece of furniture and costume has been found as an authentic vintage piece realistic to that time period. It would make sense that in the 1960s, not everything is contemporary and on the cusp of trendy, as there were still chairs and dresses floating around from the 50s and sometimes 40s. The designers behind Man Men incorporated this truth.

In regards to Pan Am, I think they spent more of their budget creating virtual buildings, planes, and airports than they did on having genuine 1960s settings. One of the characters, Bridget, is seen wearing her long wavy blonde hair down in an almost 2000's beach wave style. In another scene bottled water clearly from our era is sitting on a table in a diner. The virtual effects aren't even good. They look futuristic, almost dreamy, and reminiscent of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Everything is too clean, too manufactured. There was a short clip of Maggie's (Christina Ricci) apartment and it seemed to be the only believable setting. We nearly cheered when we saw it!

So even if the set and costume design was lackluster, but the writing and acting was superb, I'd still be watching the show. Here I am, disappointed again. Seemingly trying to nail a good plot, the story line is all over the place. The lives of four women interwoven together with men, 1960s expectations and wait, THE CIA?! That's right! Good ole' espionage to keep the interest up. Soap opera meets futuristic retro meets spies.

I'm not usually so passionate about matters such as these, but I can't help it. My hopes were very high for Pan Am and I was really disappointed. Have you watched Pan Am yet? What are your thoughts towards it?

This week the mix is titled "Isolation". Of course there's tons of sons about isolation, but this week I'm going to focus on some positive ones. There's an album that caught me by surprise and it's an album called "Year of Hibernation" by Youth Lagoon. It's an excellent exercise in isolation, and the album swallows your emotions up. I can't stop listening to that, and also the new album by M83. With this mix I'm taking an exercise in isolation being the moments that you get to imagine your own moments and fantasy worlds.

Vocabulary | Gem Club

Over the weekend my good friend, Emily Hogan, music blogger of Wholly Roller, hosted her first show at a place called The Cottage. It was the first time Tim and I had ever been there, and it was magical. The Cottage is the garage apartment of a beautiful house where the upstairs is the recording studio and the downstairs is the venue. They have all these little cafe lights that make the most incredible mood and a huge tree swing out in the yard. The bands we save were perfect and dreamy: Vocabulary, Holy Spirits, Gem Club, and Places. Tim took the pictures above and you can see the rest of the series on his flickr.

In other news, my best friend from back home came up to Atlanta for a music festival. It was wonderful being able to spend some time with her! I was able to get a new handbag and it is exactly what I have been looking for. Also pictured is the media console I mentioned in a previous post and I had been meaning to show you! That front panel slides back and forth - perfect for the records and all their glory!

I'm sure most of you don't know that I am an officer for the art history club at my university. The club is hosting an art exhibition at Mint Gallery next month and I'm very excited! This weekend I finished it up, yay! I used a discarded landscape print and illustrator markers. Here's the piece, "Better Him Than You" :

This weekend was a lot of fun. It was just what I needed - a little bit of fun, a lot of rest and relaxation. The video above is a collection of scenes taken from Flux, the art event/public art happening that I mentioned in the last post. The majority of the stuff in the video I witnessed first hand, and it was all amazing.

The opening and closing scenes show the dance, "Livers" by gloATL. The smoke and music made the whole experience just bewildering. You felt as if you were in another realm seeing something you weren't supposed to.

One of my favorite art demonstrations of the night wasn't shown in the video. It was an iron pour - which I had never seen before. It was commenting on the similarities in the way that humans and bees work. They heated the iron, pour the molten metal into molds, and out came a still glowing, very hot, bee. The molds were quickly reset and more bees were made. Poles were inserted into the bees and they were paraded around in a bee dance. Beautiful and fascinating to see molten iron in a modern and very removed society.

In other highlights, Tim & I tried a new restaurant, HD1 (Haute Dog One) that just opened up. When in doubt, pinkies out for gourmet haute dogs. (and maple glazed waffles fries, OMG, I KNOW!) Delishhhhh. And for brunch on Sunday we went to the Flying Biscuit where I got a salmon and cream cheese egg scramble with creamy dreamy grits. My fav. There was also a in-store show at Criminal Records, where Young Rapscallions played. AKA the drummer is McLovin' from Super Bad. (But don't call him that!) I didn't want to pester him for a picture or anything, but I did stare at him for a while. haha. We also stopped by our favorite vintage shop, Highland Row antiques. They were having their monthly market sale, so we got to see a bunch of new stuff. yay!

We also watched another episode of Pan Am, which I might dedicate a whole post to. It's just that bad. SNL with Melissa McCarthy was better than I hoped. Goodness, she is just hilarious. Side splittingly hilarious. And I watched another Woody Allen film, Zelig, which I'll talk about later also. My mother told me that she had seen the first episode of Terra Nova and loved it, so we gave it a shot. Honestly, it wasn't so bad. The dinosaurs could look a whole lot more realistic, but hey, it was the pilot. Hopefully it will get better.

Here's some homework: Go watch the Melissa McCarthy SNL Hidden Valley Ranch clip and get back with me. You will never see ranch the same way again - and it's a good thing. :)

Happy Friday, folks!

I am so, so thankful that the weekend is near. I've been needing some rest and there will be plenty of it tomorrow. There will also be a lot of cleaning, too. The amount of my clean clothes laying on the floor in the bedroom is goosebump worthy! But before all that delicious rest and cleaning there will be GLORY! Tonight is one of the best nights for Atlanta. Flux Projects is this fantastic art group that puts on several public art happenings throughout Atlanta during the year. Around this time of the year, Flux takes captive a whole neighborhood, Castleberry Hill, and funds artists and spaces to hold an art extravaganza. There will be over 30 public art events/performances, street food, and even more glory. This will be my 3rd year in attendance, and I can't wait! I promise to be a better blogger and actually take pictures this weekend. I've been mega slacking off in the photo biznaz. The photo of my boots is my wimpy photo apology. :)

movie recap: annie hall.

I saw Annie Hall for the first time last night. Its so funny and perfectly shows the way Woody Allen's brain works. If you haven't seen this, you really should. It's incredibly smart and Allen and Diane Keaton are so likable. I was especially encouraged to watch this after Tim's mix called Diane Keaton's Vest after the vest she wears in the movie. The shots are beautiful and the film is great all around - hence all the awards it won.

Here's some pros if you watch with friends: You'll have a million amazing quotes to throw around back and forth. Trust me, since I saw it last night, that's all Tim & I have been doing.

For example:
"Annie, there's a big lobster behind the refrigerator. I can't get it out. This thing's heavy. Maybe if I put a little dish of butter sauce here with a nutcracker, it will run out the other side."

"Love is too weak a word for what I feel - I luuurve you, you know, I loave you, I luff you, two F's."

After noticing how awful the branding for lakes are, Nicole Meyer, a graphic designer, has taken it upon herself to brand the 10,000 or so lakes in Minnesota. With her making one a day, this amazing project will take her just over 27 years. This is one of those links you might want to bookmark.

This is where we all stare dumbfoundedly for 10 minutes and then say to yourself, "Why didn't I think of that?"

Yes, I know dumbfoundedly is not a word! :)

Ulyana Sergeenko came out with her debut fall/winter line. Besides loving how glamorous and beautiful her designs are, I also love how reminiscent they are to early-mid century fashions. Sergeenko uses modest hemlines with sexy sheer fabrics and emphasises waistlines, hour glass bodies, and A-lined skirts. The closer we get to 2012, the longer the skirts seem to get, and that doesn't upset me. I'm tired of seeing the residue of 1990 mini skirts. This resurgence of femininity and sexy modesty is delightful.

It's also no surprise to me that these vintage designs are surfacing in high fashion, as mid century modern furniture and vintage clothing are being devoured. It's about time designers paid attention to what consumers are buying. Needless to say, if I could afford it, I'd be all over this line. Since I can't, I'm going to try my best to duplicate!

Happy Tuesday! Some people think that Tuesdays like today are awful because they take the role of Mondays, but how can you hate a day like today? We just got back from a long, delightful weekend, and we have a short work week as a result. Why can't every week be like this one?

I'm hoping all of you dearies out there had a great labor day weekend. Like I mentioned in the previous post, I went to Iowa for Barnstormer with some friends, and it was a load of fun. Sadly for the blog, I didn't take any pictures. Gasp! I know! But, I think it was more important for me to just take it easy. We all deserve a break sometimes.

It was a fun trip. I've never left on a road trip at night - midnight no less! We drove straight through till Iowa and crashed as soon as we got there. The show was awesome. The line up was of 8 bands, though we only stayed for 5. We were exhausted and just ready to go to bed. Plus, the ones we did see were so good, we felt it had already been worth it.

In other news, I started reading a new book: Diary by Chuck Palahniuk. So far, it's been exceptional. All in good timing too, as I was getting very bored with Milan Kundera. (Sorry, Kundera.) Anymore book recommendations? I'm trying to make a list!

Happy Friday, everyone!

I thought I would end this week with a beautiful video that really tops off the end of summer. It was a great summer, but I'm already moving on. Crisp weather will be here soon, and I am delighted. This weekend is Labor Day weekend, and there sure is a good lineup for me! ROADTRIP! Two friends, Tim & I are all driving up to Iowa tonight for Daytrotter Barnstormer. Daytrotter is a music blog that wanted to be different - so everyday at least one band will record for two hours on borrowed equipment. In the case of Barnstormer, the process happens live, in a barn in Iowa. There is more than one band playing too, so it should be fun.

And then guess what.... we're off on Monday! (Just in case you didn't know - but you probably already did and I'm hoping you're also just as excited as I am about a long weekend.)

I know I haven't done the grand reveal of the new apartment. Here are little snapshots cast in soft morning light to hold you over. It really won't be all set up and in its full glory for a few weeks or so. Right now there is lots of random possessions scattered about, miles of cables and all the framed art still stacked against the walls. And regardless of all that, I'm swooning about this place. And yes, it's called The Apollo.

This week's mix is titled "Frugality". It's pretty simple. The whole mix isn't about money, or lack thereof. It's songs inspired by a overwhelming feeling of frugality (at least for me this week before paying off some bills). weekend: parties, pugs, and picking up.

This weekend was pleasant and eventful! Tim & I got good Mexican food and celebrated the birthdays of our friends and went to the grand opening party for a new store location of the company I work for. They had Fox Bro. BBQ (the best Atlanta BBQ) and Sweetwater beer, giveaways and shuffleboard. We saw an adorable pug outside of a coffee shop and ate even more delicious food. I was able to spend a lot of time picking up the apartment - finding more homes for homeless possessions. I set up my terrarium on Friday and potted the rest of my plants in their new ceramic homes.

But here's the biggest highlight.

Mark Weaver is an amazing graphic designer and right now he lives here in Atlanta. Good news for him is that he got hired in NYC with The Daily and leaves Thursday. Sad news for me was that I really thought I'd never get to run into him around the city.... until this. That's right, a YARD SALE!!! Tim worships Mark just as much as I do, so we were freaking out at the opportunity to meet/buy Mark Weaver's old possessions. haha. So we went...and hardly said anything because we were so shell shocked! But we were able to run off with that beautiful typewriter and mirror tray (that I put my decanters on). So it wasn't a total loss and it was certainly an adventure!

I know everyone is broadcasting about Dana Tanamachi all over the interwebs, but I just had to add to the volume. I actually did some handwritten type on chalkboard last summer when I was interning at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, so it's in my heart. I thought you might enjoy the stop motion vid.

Check out the new family addition! I bout this beautiful lad from Grade A Fresh on etsy. They have a whole bunch of great mid-century finds, so you should check them out. I also bought a great old clock from them too. For right now, this precious deer is on my coffee table, but that may change after a while. This week's mix is simply titled "DRUG". The simplest reason is because music is my personal drug. I had a very lovely weekend. This was the first Sunday I haven't had to work in probably 5 years. I am working full time at my day job now and don't need my silly Sunday morning at Ruby Tuesday anymore (thank goodness!). That job was just a headache and I never made enough money to make it worthwhile.

So what did I do on my first Sunday off? Well, I ate at Grindhouse Burgers for the first time. I ordered a delicious burger with blue cheese spread, sauteed mushrooms and a fried vidalia onion. YUM. Then I got a new nose stud in titanium with an opal setting. Yay! I wanted to get a ring, but my nose needs to heal a little more still. Afterwards we finished season 3 of Mad Men and headed over to his parent's house for dinner. BAKED ZITI followed by STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE. delicious.

Also during the weekend I went to my first hip hop show in East Atlanta Village. That was fun. And I took Tim to our favorite restaurant - Panahar Bangladesh Cuisine. MORE YUM. I could eat that delicious korma dish every single day.
