#740 Certainly Red

Over one hundred women from different parts of the country were joined together by Alyson Fox. Though instead of similar interests tying them together, they are all joined by one shade of red lipstick. Fox photographed women of all races and ages wearing Revlon's #740 Certainly Red lipstick. Her ideas stem from the development of a women's self image by applying lipstick and the transformation of a women when photographed. You can read more about it here.

Here is a very moving quote found on her site:

"It was shortly after the British Red Cross arrived, though it may have no connection, that a very large quantity of lipstick arrived…Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet red lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over their shoulders, but with scarlet red lips….That lipstick started to give them back their humanity.
– Colonel Gonin (commenting on the liberation of the Bergen-Belson concentration camp)"

  1. I love this concept. Such a wonderful way to tie women of all ages and backgrounds together.

  2. I agree. It's a really unusual way to tie women, but it actually does make sense, right? I may have five lipsticks I wear that none of my friends do, but out there, I'm sure lots of other women wear the same shades. Interesting to match us together by a shade.

  3. My friend's Grandma would never go out without her lipstick "red lips for courage" she'd say--I wonder if it came from this concept =)

  4. oh my gosh, i got chill bumps reading that! what an incredible concept and the photos are so beautiful.

  5. Sarah - I did too. My father's side is Jewish and I had never heard something like that before. So touching.
