Several months ago I had the delightful pleasure of sharing a beautiful breakfast with Ginny Branch and Caroline Petters. Caroline and I had gotten together and wanted to use her (gorgeous) photography and my blog to share some beautiful homes and meals. So we started with Ginny Branch. Not only does she have one of the most beautiful homes I've ever visited, but she is a darn good host and cook. She prepared baked eggs, delicious cheeses and jams, a fresh juice she made in front of us, and coffee, of course. I'm so glad that this little gathering was captured, as it was far too beautiful to selfishly keep to ourselves.

LITTLE PARTIES

party

Over the weekend I hosted a little Friendsgiving party. I love hosting little parties, but I don't get a lot of chances to do so. I tried my best to make this party really special with decorations and even a special little cocktail! I wish I had gotten a picture of it! It was a whiskey sour made with honey simple syrup and lemon soda.

I also made the turkey and stuffing and my friends brought everything else you can think of. We we really had a great time.

P.S. I'm going to try and come back here more often. Being back in school really has been taking a toll on me. Also expect some long time coming posts. I have old things to share!

COMING TOGETHER

You would have thought that after this year I would have this place more put together. Well I feel like I'm almost there. Finally got the guts to share some real pictures of my apartment - not just little vague snapshots from instagram. There's still a lot more I would like to do. (like more plants!) And maybe one day I'll have a couch that I won't have to drape with blankets because the cats loveeeee it. haha

And yes, I am a sudoku master, if you were wondering.

Home // Vignette
This is a little vignette from my bedroom. I think it says a lot about my decorating style - lots of vintage: the cigar box, record sleeve, two mirrors, my mom's high school acrylic painting; a touch of modern: Design*Sponge at Home, and two smooth hour glasses; and a shout out to nature: fresh flowers. Every time I walk into my room and see my dresser, I smile. I think it's important for our bedrooms to reflect our style and be a place for relaxation and inspiration.

A few favorite pieces of mine. A (new to me) vintage lace top. I want to wear this every single day. My minty green geo earrings from A Merry Mishap. And my handmade applewood necklace.

As a prop stylist and event planner, I'd be lost without my props. This is a little peek at some of my favorite small details. Where would I be without my glassware, coffee pots, and photo backdrops?

SNIPPETS NO.6

Glass and Sable Snippets Andrew Gallo Carissa Gallo Parker Fitzgerald Kinfolk Terrain Jennifer Hagler Design Sponge Kindah

1. Kinfolk had another gorgeous dinner, this time at Terrain. Parker Fitzgerald took photographs of the event and took some especially beautiful images of some of my favorites, Andrew and Carissa Gallo.

2. Loving this little clutch from Kindah.

3. Jennifer Hagler's home was featured on Design Sponge this week. I was already drooling at all her peaks via instagram, but this feature really confirmed my admiration of her gorgeous home.

Ahh, beautiful (mostly Swedish) monochromatic homes. I love finding Swedish sites like Sköna Hem that feature gorgeous simple homes. That and all of Jennifer Hagler's instagram photos of her home. I don't know if I'll ever have a totally black and white minimalistic home, but I'll definitely dream!

HOME UPDATE & FINDS

vintage matchbooks matchbook mid century match Glass and Sable

When I moved into this apartment, I didn't really have much. I had books, clothes, and the essentials, but nothing very decorative. In the last few weeks I've been pinning pillows, throws, and decorative items to try and round the apartment out and bring some life into the place I love. It's taken a long time, but I think after this weekend, there are only a few things on my wish list left and I'm very happy with it. So this isn't the big apartment tour, just more revealing than last time, and mostly just showing what I came home with this weekend. And firstly, check out those matchbooks! 25¢ each!

It took me long enough, but I put the coffee machine in the cabinet, as I don't make coffee everyday. This little vignette took its place, which is a lot more charming than a coffee maker. Notice the door to the left. It is a door I can't open - or don't have a key for. It goes to a back entrance of the apartment which leads to... nowhere? No one in the building has access to these doors. Strange.

I have always loved pennants. There is something great about vintage sports equipment. I'm planning on pairing the pennant with the tennis rackets and starting a vintage sports wall in the bedroom. (sorry, I had to throw in a cat. Come on! Look at that adorable pose.)

foyer living room dracaena secret holiday & co Glass and Sabledracaena living room planter Glass and Sable

Here are some works in progress. My Secret Holiday & Co Affirmation Banner came in! Wooo! I am actually only hanging it by a piece of tape (sad, I know) only because I don't want to commit to a nail quite yet. I'm trying to work a deal with a friend to have a live edge table built for that tiny space. Otherwise, I might just throw up some coat hooks and a nice woven basket on the floor. Also notice, more doors. The more photos I show from the apartment, you're start to see how many doors there really are. Something in the neighborhood of 8 or 9 doors.

One of my other projects has been plant collecting. I went to a local plant nursery (which was like heaven!) and came home with that lovely dracaena and the tiny snake plant. I'm still on the hunt for a modern white planter for the dracaena. Have any suggestions?

Sometime this week I will be cloning a rubber tree from work. The process is very interesting as it involves wounding the plant's branch and then wrapping it in saran wrap until roots grow from that area. I look forward to sharing that process with you soon!

TAKING DOWN NOTES

tea mug towel spoon relax break glass and sable

Last week I went home early from work due to these crazy allergies I have. I never used to have any type of allergy, but maybe because I'm always around plants and soil (and dust?), I think it's gotten the best of me. So I managed to take a nice relaxing nap (you could also call it passing out from Benadryl) and drank some mint tea. It was actually nice to take a little unexpected break. That previous weekend I had gone thrifting with my friend Jessie, and I never showed you what I came home with. Two tennis rackets! (They were $1.30 each!!!)

I haven't decided where to put them yet, but that's okay. I've worked out the main furniture layouts in my apartment, but there is still more I want to do. So after pinning a bunch of ideas, I decided the best way to really put down my thoughts would be to sketch it out. So I took a few corners of the apartment that need work, and did a before and after. I drew out what I had been envisioning, and wrote down the list of all the things I'd need for each room. If I have a clear vision of what I want to do, it is so much easier for me to actually get it down. I'm feeling good about this!

SNIPPETS NO.3

FIND

1. A beautiful tour of Tara Mangini & Percy Bright's home by Design Sponge. They have the perfect little place with impeccable styling. So much inspiration here.

2. How Companies Learn Your Secrets: An incredibly interested 9 page long New York Times article on marketing strategies by Target, Febreeze, and others. I was totally captivated on how these companies can figure out that a teenage girl is pregnant even before her parents know. It also contains interesting facts on how humans form habits - which comes in handy if you're planning to make or break some.

3. This is a great baby announcement video by John Jenson that gets many bonus points for design elements and cinematography.

4. Clock DIY for folks with good taste and low funds. IKEA Clock + H&M belts. Can't get better than that. Well, maybe if IKEA sold belts, too.

Happy Fridays, friends! Have a great weekend!

PILLOW TALK

pillows

I really love Turkish Kilim pillows (and rugs for that matter). I've been searching around for the perfect ones for my place. There is something really wonderful about handmade items, as these pillows were once hand woven rugs. And so if you don't have all the space in the world to put some (potentially pricey) kilim rugs, there are never enough pillows! This batch of pillow covers are from Organic Shine Society on Etsy. And even if those are a little out of your price range - just go here!

AIR PLANT CRAZE

il_fullxfull
airplants

Air plants are seriously the plants for me. Dip them in water every now and then, and that's it! Stick them where ever you want and you don't have to worry about pots or soil or any of that. Sounds like a dream, right? Now here's the thing. Lots of people are selling them on Etsy for half a fortune. I was looking up some wholesale sites and even ebay has them for a lot cheaper than Etsy sellers. Air Plant Supply Co. has a beautiful selection, great prices, and information. At least check out their site. And this is a cute place to put one of your air plants!

Also, as a side note, Fab.com has a special on air plants from Air Plant Supply Co. and hanging pods. Score!

+ isn't that bottle gorgeous? i bought that here!

wishlist

Here's some lovelies that have been on my mind for quite some time now. You can probably tell I'm working hard on getting some decorations for my walls. Well those poor walls need some sprucing up. These all come from my favorites on Etsy and some of them I've already purchased. The rest will come with time!! ♥

ampersand

ampersand

I am so sorry that I have been a missing person! It's true, I've really slacked off. I acknowledge it! I take the blame for it! So what was I doing? Honestly, it's kind of pathetic. I was upgrading my jailbroken iPhone to the new ios 5. I ran into a couple of errors and kept having to do the jailbreak over and over and over. Blah. But I'm back! (and for good!)

The photo above was taken by Tim, but it's of the new ampersand I bought! It was made by Edie's Lab, found on Etsy. They make a ton of these beautiful wooden letters. Gosh I love them all! Needless to say, I'm very please with the newest addition.

We've been all sorts of busy. We saw Wild Flag on Saturday night in Athens at the 40 Watt Club. If you don't know who Wild Flag is, you might know who Carrie Brownstein is - the lead lady of the comedy show Portlandia. She's one of the singers/guitarists for Wild Flag. They rocked out! It was a glorious show. Amazing girl rock at its finest. Totally check them out.

Btw, I'm gushing over all the love around here on Glass and Sable. You folks are so nice! ♥

show review: pan am

panamsticker

"It's true! Americans love the 1960s - as seen from all the outpouring on Mad Men - Quick! Let's pump out several 1960s shows too!"

I'm sure that's what the producers of Pan Am and The Playboy Club were thinking. It's also a possibility that if you copy someone's idea, you might not get as far as they do. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Pan Am, it takes place in the early 60s with four Pan Am flight attendants. This is when flight attendants were practically models and flying in on plane got you more than just free peanuts. The idea of this show is not bad, I have to admit. I was genuinely excited to watch the pilot and hoped that it could fill the huge Mad Men hole in my heart.

Any time period film or show has one essential - make the period authentic. If the settings are authentic and true to that period, you're half way there. Build a strong plot after that and you have the beginnings to a sustainable show/film. However, mess up that period, and you've already lost. Thus are my feelings towards Pan Am.

panam1

Over the last few weeks as I've been researching the set design for Mad Men, I came to understand the part of the reason it has such a huge fan base is because the costumes and furniture aren't set pieces. Almost every piece of furniture and costume has been found as an authentic vintage piece realistic to that time period. It would make sense that in the 1960s, not everything is contemporary and on the cusp of trendy, as there were still chairs and dresses floating around from the 50s and sometimes 40s. The designers behind Man Men incorporated this truth.

In regards to Pan Am, I think they spent more of their budget creating virtual buildings, planes, and airports than they did on having genuine 1960s settings. One of the characters, Bridget, is seen wearing her long wavy blonde hair down in an almost 2000's beach wave style. In another scene bottled water clearly from our era is sitting on a table in a diner. The virtual effects aren't even good. They look futuristic, almost dreamy, and reminiscent of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Everything is too clean, too manufactured. There was a short clip of Maggie's (Christina Ricci) apartment and it seemed to be the only believable setting. We nearly cheered when we saw it!

panam4Bridget shown with long waves
panam5Modern bottled water seen on the table

So even if the set and costume design was lackluster, but the writing and acting was superb, I'd still be watching the show. Here I am, disappointed again. Seemingly trying to nail a good plot, the story line is all over the place. The lives of four women interwoven together with men, 1960s expectations and wait, THE CIA?! That's right! Good ole' espionage to keep the interest up. Soap opera meets futuristic retro meets spies.

I'm not usually so passionate about matters such as these, but I can't help it. My hopes were very high for Pan Am and I was really disappointed. Have you watched Pan Am yet? What are your thoughts towards it?

Over the weekend my good friend, Emily Hogan, music blogger of Wholly Roller, hosted her first show at a place called The Cottage. It was the first time Tim and I had ever been there, and it was magical. The Cottage is the garage apartment of a beautiful house where the upstairs is the recording studio and the downstairs is the venue. They have all these little cafe lights that make the most incredible mood and a huge tree swing out in the yard. The bands we save were perfect and dreamy: Vocabulary, Holy Spirits, Gem Club, and Places. Tim took the pictures above and you can see the rest of the series on his flickr.

In other news, my best friend from back home came up to Atlanta for a music festival. It was wonderful being able to spend some time with her! I was able to get a new handbag and it is exactly what I have been looking for. Also pictured is the media console I mentioned in a previous post and I had been meaning to show you! That front panel slides back and forth - perfect for the records and all their glory!

I'm sure most of you don't know that I am an officer for the art history club at my university. The club is hosting an art exhibition at Mint Gallery next month and I'm very excited! This weekend I finished it up, yay! I used a discarded landscape print and illustrator markers. Here's the piece, "Better Him Than You" :
